About us
The African Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production (ARSCP) is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2004. The ARSCP serves as a platform for the coordination and execution of multinational projects, knowledge sharing, and networking among national cleaner production centres (NCPCs) and sustainable consumption and production (SCP)-practicing institutions and professionals in Africa. Its Secretariat is in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It has 241 members across 41 countries in Africa.
The ARSCP’s mandate is to promote SCP practices through the implementation of the Ten-year Framework of Programmes on SCP in African countries.
The ARSCP builds capacity, promotes new SCP centers of excellence and act as a networking and clearing house for SCP in the region. It develops and replicates SCP by increasing awareness and fostering production of low-carbon products, and thus promoting sustainable lifestyles and livelihood. Its efforts contribute towards mitigating climate change, and environmental sustainability through reduced pollution, social sustainability, employment creation and economic sustainability by improving the production efficiency and profitability of small and micro enterprises in Africa. The ARSCP fosters the realisation of Sustainable Development Goal No. 12 on ‘Sustainable Consumption and Production’.
The ARSCP has carried out several multinational projects in Africa, including:
- Global trade in products containing heavy metals for UNIDO;
- Global SCP Policy Review; and
- Water-saving initiative for breweries in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya and Uganda for UNEP.
It has also played an instrumental role of coordinating and providing stewardship in implementation of resource efficient and cleaner production initiatives for the affiliate institutions.
The ARSCP has played a coordinating role in the implementation of several multinational projects, among others:
- The industrial symbiosis component of the EU-funded Switch Africa Green, in collaboration with UN Environment, UNDP and UNOPS; and
- The GIZ-funded Eco Mark Africa Certification & Labelling as eco-labelling.
